Things took a slightly devilish turn at the welchtoons HQ earlier this afternoon. Well it is almost Halloween after all...
2021 Description update:
I would say this is probably one of the more popular pieces I have drawn or created over the years. I originally created this piece in 2014 and it is a mixture of photographic collage and artwork. The photos include elements of an old house in Westbourne, Sussex where I grew up, some old houses in Portsmouth, various texture photography and a human skull that I took some photos of in the Booth Museum of Natural History in Brighton.
I genuinely think if I had just £1 for every time this piece has been used by someone in the past I would be a rich man by now. As you can probably tell from my tone this isn’t the case sadly and I only wish it was.
Let me explain…
So far this piece has been used on everything from blogs, gig posters, books, podcasts, magazine articles, dodgy free desktop wallpaper websites, popular YouTube channels and Patreon pages. All without my permission or any acknowledgment of course and that’s only the stuff I know about. I only know any of this as periodically I have done Google image searches for it to see if it’s been used again.
I think the worst case I’ve ever had was where a Canadian rock band (fairly well known in some areas & with a Twitter following of 69,000 fans) used this image for a 28 date tour (t shirts/Posters etc) and then also used it for a magazine article in Revolver magazine promoting the said tour. As I say all without my permission. I only found out about this two years after the fact.
It’s so sad when things like this happen. We’re all artist/creators, we’re all struggling to do our thing, you’d think people would be more considerate. If only people would just ask or at the very least acknowledge me as the artist. It’s so odd that some people think if they find something on the internet it must be free to use. Everything has been created by someone. Don’t get me wrong it’s awesome that people seem to like this one it just grates slightly that it become a bit of a free for all image which certainly wasn’t my intention.

Love the scenery on this one
